Description:

Magna Graecia, southern Italy, Apulia, ca. 340 to 325 BCE. A Greek pottery skyphos (wine cup) with a rounded body and horizontal twin loop handles on a short round concave foot, the exterior walls decorated in the Xenon style with added matt red stylized leafy tendril patterns over the deep black glaze. Xenon ware is a specific type of Apulian pottery, named after a vase in Frankfurt (Beazley, EVP, p. 219,1.) that is inscribed with the name: XENON. The type is distinguished by added matt red decoration over black glaze. This is a beautiful example with an attractive nature-inspired pattern and lovely iridescence to the black ground. Size: 7.625" in diameter x 3" H (19.4 cm x 7.6 cm)
