Description:

Greece, Magna Graecia, southern Italy, Apulia, ca. 340 to 325 BCE. A bright ceramic plate standing on a round foot and a slightly corseted foot. The body of the plate is perfectly round, with a slightly raised rim and a very slightly concave interior. The underside is buff - on the inside of the foot - and black everywhere else. The interior is brightly painted, with a striped rim, and a "lady of fashion" motif in tondo. She is shown facing right, wearing a kekryphalos, a type of hair covering, earrings, and a beaded or pearl necklace. Surrounding her is a motif of elongated palmettes, and in Apulian style, the paint is red, yellow, and pink. The "lady of fashion" motif is thought to represent a young woman on her wedding day.
