Description:

Ancient Greece, Hellenistic period, ca. 323 to 31 BCE. A ceramic statuette of a beautiful siren gracefully standing in contrapposto and donning a flowing chiton with drapery that cascades over her body as her open wings project to either side - all upon an integral base. In Greek mythology, Sirens were regarded as dangerous beings who seductively lured sailors to their demise as their enchanting songs distracted and attracted the men to rocky coasts where they would unfortunately succumb to disastrous shipwrecks. Statues of sirens were also used in funerary contexts in mainland Greece, Asia Minor, and Magna Graecia. The Siren of Canosa (Canosa di Puglia in Apulia), for example was said to accompany the dead in burial. Size: 5.125" W x 7.625" H (13 cm x 19.4 cm)

Provenance: private Orange County, California USA collection acquired before 2000
