Description:

Greece, Tanagra, Boeotia, ca. 4th century BCE. A pretty kantharos (drinking cup) with finely shaped strap handles that rise far above the body, a deep, wide bowl, and a low, round foot almost as wide as the body. The body has been fired to a glossy, even black painted over all but the foot; the foot has a small black ring on its underside that archaeologists have interpreted to be evidence of these objects being fired while stacked on one other. This vessel was made to be placed into a grave, perhaps to hold an offering of wine. Size: 6" L x 4" W x 3.9" H (15.2 cm x 10.2 cm x 9.9 cm)
