Metapontion, also known as Metapontum, was a Lucanian town with strong Greek cultural ties, and that was periodically a Greek colony. They began to mint coinage in the 3rd century BCE. The symbol of Skylla (Scylla), the mythological monster, was designed to inspire fear and demonstrate the fierceness of Lucanian warriors.
