Description:

Northern Greece, Thrace, ca. 9th to 7th century BCE. A beautiful leaded bronze spectacle, or double spiral, fibula (brooch), skillfully created from leaded bronze wire, a single wire that was meticulously twisted in a rotational fashion so as to create this iconic pattern, and resolving in a long pin set in the catch formed by the opposite end of the bronze wire. The spectacle design was remarkably long-lasting, dating back to the 13th century BCE. Such fibulae have been found all over Southern Europe - mostly in the Balkans and south of the Danube and as far afield as Poland, Switzerland, and the western Mediterranean - often buried with their owners to accompany them in the afterlife. Size: 2.9" W x 1.4" H (7.4 cm x 3.6 cm)
