Greece, Hellenistic period, ca. late 4th to late 2nd century BCE. A mold-formed plaque depicting the broad face of a gorgon, shown here with a wide, open mouth, petite eyes, and a head full of tight hair coils. This plaque was perhaps part of a decorative frieze based on the grooved lower periphery and the fragmentary details along a lateral side. The concept of a gorgon, a frightening, beast-like, female creature, is at least as old as Homer and continued to be used as a monstrous symbol throughout the Roman period, especially as a popular decoration on pottery. Lucite display stand for photography purposes only. Size: 7.5" W x 6.8" H (19 cm x 17.3 cm)

Provenance: ex-private William Freolich collection, New York, USA, acquired in 1970’s
