Greece, Hellenistic Period, ca. late 4th to 1st century BCE. A large cast bronze goblet with deep, bell-shaped bowl, a narrow leg, and a flaring, two-tiered disc foot. Elite Greeks commissioned sumptuous vessels made of bronze for use in symposia, the formal drinking parties frequently enjoyed by men of high status. This goblet would have been kept alongside other bronze accoutrement, such as situlae, oinochoai, and kraters, all used for the elaborate ritual of mixing wine with water and serving it. Based on the artwork of funerary ceramics, such as red-figure amphorae, Greeks at this time associated symposia with the celebration of life that accompanied interning the dead. This goblet may have ended its life in the tomb of a Greek nobleman. Size: 5.1" W x 6.2" H (13 cm x 15.7 cm)
