Description:

Ancient. Greece, Hellenistic period, ca. 4th to 3rd centuries BCE. An earthenware votive figure of the goddess Aphrodite, mold-made and hollow. She stands on a cube pedestal, nude, with one hand resting on her groin and the other raised and holding a flowing cloak. Her coiffure is well-formed and depicted as veiled on the back of her head and flowing down over one shoulder to the crease of her elbow. Aphrodite, the goddess of love, sex, and beauty, is depicted here (as she always was) with the ideal Greek body - small, perky breasts, a narrow waist, and elaborate, long hair. The votive statue may have been placed in a small household altar, or given as an offering at a temple dedicated to the goddess. Size: 2.3" L x 3" W x 10.2" H (5.8 cm x 7.6 cm x 25.9 cm)
