Description:

Greece, Hellenistic Period, ca. late 3rd to 1st century BCE. A fascinating ceramic bowl, probably made to hold offerings in the grave, featuring a high relief youthful face in tondo. This face was made using a mold, and on the underside, you can see the impression of the fingers that added this component to the base of the bowl (this would have once been covered by the lost foot). The face may represent Medusa, with her cursed snake hair streaming out around her, but it is difficult to tell if the hair is meant to be serpentine. The rest of the bowl is smooth-sided, with a gently raised rim. Size: 7.75" W x 2.3" H (19.7 cm x 5.8 cm)

This piece has been tested using thermoluminescence (TL) analysis and has been found to be ancient and of the period stated. A full report will accompany purchase.
