Magna Graecia, South Italic Colonies, Apulia, near Ignazia, ca. 340 to 320 BCE. A beautiful wheel-thrown pottery thistle mug with a tiered footed base, a rotund body with an indented shoulder, a tall rim with a flared lip, and an applied loop handle. The elegant vessel is decorated along the rim exterior with fugitive yellow and white pigments that form a register of ovolo on the top, thin linear striations above yellow stippling in the middle, and tall zigzagging lines on the bottom. Lustrous jet-black glaze covers the entire vessel, save for the interior and a reserve band around the foot, and glinting silvery iridescence has formed across most glazed surfaces. Size: 3" W x 4.8" H (7.6 cm x 12.2 cm).
