Description:

Magna Graecia, southern Italy, Apulia, ca. 340 to 325 BCE. A gorgeous, delicate Xenon ware ewer. The elongated-apple-shaped body stands on a diminutive round foot. The spout is split, forming a "U" shape. Where it meets the handle are two applied faces of youths, one on either side. The strap-like handle is squared off and rises above the spout. It meets the body at the shoulder. There are remains of red pigment on the faces, and finely painted red leaf patterns on the shoulder and upper body. Size: 3" W x 7.5" H (7.6 cm x 19 cm)

Xenon ware is a specific type of Apulian pottery, named after a vase in Frankfurt (Beazley, EVP, p. 219,1.) that is inscribed with the name: XENON. The type is distinguished by added matt red decoration over black glaze. This is a beautiful example with an attractive nature-inspired pattern and lovely iridescence to the black ground.
