Description:

Greek colonies, Italy, Daunia, ca. 300 BCE. A fine example of a ceramic kyathos with black and red pigment on a buff ground. Daunian society included a mixture of native Italians and Greeks who had settled in the area, and their ceramic forms reflected that. This one, for example, is a form of the Greek kyathos, or dipper, with a flat, long, looping handle, but the wide strap handle is uniquely Daunian. Many of these vessels, like this example, were ornamented with bands of geometric decoration called listati. This particular example has squared-off, linear designs in black and red over the buff, brown body. As early as the 6th century BCE, Daunia was an extremely wealthy region as is evidenced by the rich grave goods from the urban centers of Canosa, Arpi, and Salapia among others. Daunian pottery is characterized by voluminous rounded forms with geometric and linear patterns in earth tones as we see in this well-preserved example. Size: 7.25" L x 6.25" W x 5.8" H (18.4 cm x 15.9 cm x 14.7 cm)
