Description:

Magna Graecia, Southern Italy, Campania, ca. 325 BCE. A beautiful, diminutive mug with a bulging, ribbed body atop a round foot and beneath a wide mouth. A handle, made of two rolls of clay, flows from the upper shoulder, splitting to either side where they meet the rim. The body's black glaze was probably intended to resemble bronze or silver. Campanian wares, one of the five types of known pottery produced in the Greek South Italic colonies, were made by Greek colonists in the cities of Capua and Cumae.
