Description:

Magna Graecia, Southern Italy, Campania, ca. 325 BCE. A black-glazed pottery guttos (oil pouring vessel), taller than many known examples, with a rounded form. It has a single, trumpet-shaped spout, a ring handle attached to the upper shoulder, and a central disc, slightly concave, bearing a relief image of a pegasus with a warrior on his back - probably Bellerophon. A guttos like this example would have been used for holding precious oil to fill lamps. Size: 5.15" W x 4.85" H (13.1 cm x 12.3 cm)

Pegasus is one of the most popular and instantly recognizable figures in Greek mythology - a magnificent winged horse. He is said to have aided the hero Bellerophon as he fought against the chimera. The figure here has one arm raised as if holding a spear, ready to strike.
