Description:

Greece, Athens, ca. 540 to 530 BCE. A stupendous Attic kylix (drinking cup), the vessel presenting a classic form with a deep bowl and twin, upturned loop handles upon a pedestal base. The exterior walls are finely decorated via black-figure technique. Side A features three nude running athletes (two in profile, one in composite profile) amid two pairs of draped figures, probably officials of the events. Side B appears to have a similar painted composition, only the upper portion of the scene is missing. Black bands, highlights, and decorative palmettes to either side of each handle, as well as a reserve band in tondo further adorn the piece. Of the utmost artistry and technique, a beautiful example associated with the celebratory ceremonies of the Dionysiac cult. Size: 11.625" W handlespan x 5.375" H (29.5 cm x 13.7 cm)

Provenance: ex-collection can der Aa, Belgium; before Dutch collection, acquired in the 1960s
