Description:

Ancient Greece, Athens (Attic), ca. 5th century BCE. An elegant olpe decorated in the traditional black-figure technique with additional red and white fugitive pigment highlighting the figures. The scene includes Dionysos - god of wine, pleasure, ritual madness, ecstasy, and theatre - and a dancing maenad with grapevines in the field. A heavily draped and bearded Dionysos stands in profile holding his wine horn out before him and facing the maenad who stands in composite profile though with her head turned backward so as to engage with Dionysos. These poses make it possible for the viewer to see the drinking horn held by Dionysos as well as the maenad's curvaceous form in motion. A wonderful example! Size: 3.5" W x 7" H (8.9 cm x 17.8 cm)
