Greece, Athens, ca. 449 to 413 BCE. (16.4 g) Obverse: Head of Athena right, wearing earring, necklace, and crested Attic helmet. Reverse: Owl standing right, head facing; olive sprig and crescent to left, AOE to right; all within incuse square (hammering or pressing technique for striking into the coin). Size: 1" W (2.5 cm)

The owl is a symbol of Athena, and is often shown accompanying her; Athena, of course, was the goddess of the city of Athens, and so the owl also became a symbol of the city and its government.
