Description:

Ancient Greece, Archaic Period, ca. 6th to 5th century BCE. A solid bronze statuette of a horse cast via the lost wax process of a miniature scale, standing upon relatively short legs, with a very long tail extending behind him, a curved nose, and perky ears. Sculpture of this period is generally small in scale, and figures have simplified schematic shapes as we see in this example. A wonderful piece representing the beginning of Greek figural art when the Hellenic penchant for naturalism was in its embryonic stages. Size: 2.5" L x 1.875" H (6.4 cm x 4.8 cm)

Provenance: private Orange County, California, USA collection, acquired before 2000
