Description:

**First Time At Auction**

Greece, Phokis Federal Coinage, ca. 485 to 480 BCE. AR triobol (2.72 g). Obverse: Bull's head facing in high relief. Reverse: Archaic head of Artemis left in incuse, letters around. Williams 22. Size: 0.5" W (1.3 cm)

Phokis, also known as Phocis, was very early for minting coins - they began not much later than the middle of the sixth century. Money was issued at the periodic meetings of the town's wealthy male citizens, when there was a large gathering with a fair or market. The bull's head is probably symbolic of a sacrifice made in honor of the town's eponymous hero, Phokos.
