Description:

**Originally Listed At $800**

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 2nd century CE. A gorgeous, semi-translucent Roman glass vessel of golden amber hues with canes of contrasting opaque creamy white glass swirled throughout the body. This type of ancient glass - variously known as "marbled", "color-band", or "mosaic" glass - is created through a process of casting and blowing which allows the artist to weave strands of different-colored glass throughout the composition. The slightly concave base presents a nice pontil scar indicating that the piece was free-blown. A very attractive example! Size: 4.25" in diameter x 2.5" H (10.8 cm x 6.4 cm)

Provenance: The Dere Family Collection, New York, USA, assembled 1970s-2000s; ex-Christopher Sheppard, London, UK to Martin Wunsch Collection, New York, USA, acquired in 1980s

#147780

  • Condition: Minute nicks on rim. Otherwise intact with scattered earthen and mineral deposits. There is also a nice pontil mark on the underside of the base. A pontil scar or mark indicates that a vessel was free-blown, while the absence of such a mark suggests that the work was either mold-blown or that the mark was intentionally smoothed away or wore away over time.
