Roman, early Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 2nd century CE. A lovely pair of wearable earrings formed from 89% gold wire (equivalent to 21K+ gold). Each earring has an S-shaped body with a serpentine pin, a rectangular wire framework with a rigid stabilization panel in the middle, and a twisted wire noose to suspend the framework in an upright position. Size of each (both are relatively similar): 1.2" H (3 cm); quality of gold: 89% (equivalent to 21K+); total weight: 2.4 grams

Provenance: The Dere Family Collection, New York, USA, assembled 1970s-2000s; ex-Madame Frances Artuner Collection, Belgium, acquired in 1960s

  • Condition: Wearable as shown, though a reputable jeweler could attach modern pins for increased comfortability. Both earrings have slight bending to overall forms of pins and central wire framework, and light encrustations within some recessed areas, otherwise intact and very good. Light earthen deposits and fine patina throughout.
