Ancient Rome, Imperial period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A stunning hand-blown translucent blue-green glass bowl (patera in Latin) with a dimpled base and nice broken pontil, as well as a few areas of rainbow iridescence. Glassmakers in the Levant during the early first century BCE invented the technique of blowing glass through a hollow tube to inflate it; this technology came to Rome with the annexation of that area in 64 BCE. Glass blowing allowed the mass production of glassware throughout the Roman area of influence and it rapidly replaced pottery in the household.A lovely example that boasts an attractive globular form, beautiful pale blue-green hues, and nice areas of iridescence.
