Description:

Near East, Persia (Iran), ca. 15th to 18th century CE. A beautiful niello jarlette with repeated double fish and vine motifs. Niello is a mixture of copper, silver, and lead sulphates with a black color, often inlaid or engraved onto etched metal. This jarlette has a round, apple-shaped body, stands on a flat base, and has a thin neck that flares outward into a narrow, flat rim. Around the body are pairs of fish, shown with their bodies arched, their tails and faces almost touching as the rest of their bodies curve away from each other. Tendrils that turn into vines seem to emerge from the mouth of each fish; other vines, complete with leaves, snake around the body, creating a bright, but not unruly, surface. Size: 2.4" W x 2.3" H (6.1 cm x 5.8 cm)
