Description:

China, Warring States Period, 475 to 221 BCE. This is a gorgeous, well-preserved bronze short sword with a round pommel and small guard. A bronze sword made during the Warring States Period is actually a throwback and probably never saw use in battle; it was during this time that steel swords were first made in China and quickly became the standard as smelting technology rapidly evolved. However, this sword was probably made to serve as a grave good, a ceremonial mark of high status. This piece must have been buried in a particularly airless and water-free grave to be so well preserved! Size: 15.5" L x 1.9" W (39.4 cm x 4.8 cm)

Provenance: Ex-J. Connell Collection
