Description:

Near East, ca. 4th-5th Century CE. Gandharan stucco seated Buddha with traces of polychrome. The Buddha sits cross-legged on a carinated base with his right hand resting on his left. He has a somewhat elongated oval face with relatively sharp eyebrows extending onto his narrow, pointed nose, almond-shaped, nearly shut eyes, pursed lips, small chin, and elongated earlobes. His hair, indicated by irregular gouges, has a raised edge and a slight "widow's peak," as well as the usnisa. He wears a long-sleeved robe with a U-shaped neckline and concentric folds over his right breast that is stretched taut over his knees, with the overfold tucked neatly underneath his feet. Red pigment highlights the folds of the Buddha's robe and the carinated edge of the base. For the body, cf. Zwalf, cat. no. 542.
