Description:

Near East, ca. 4th-5th Century CE. A beautifully detailed schist frieze depicting the death of the Buddha. At center, the Buddha lies in state on a couch, attended by his disciples. The younger monks succumb to grief, while the elders are stoic, understanding that the Buddha's "death" is simply the achievement of Nirvana. The figures are finely carved, each with unique gestures depicting an individual response to the important event. The Buddha is serene, pillowing his head with his left hand in gentle repose. The scene is framed by two trees, reaching up to a ceiling decorated with an incised geometric design. 13 3/4" x 10" excluding custom stand.
