Description:

Central Asia, Pakistan, India, and Afghanistan, Gandharan Empire, ca. 1st century CE. A lovely depiction of the Buddha, hand-carved from grey schist, seated atop an integral platform with crossed legs. His hands are presented in Dhyana mudra, a meditative pose with upturned palms placed right over left, while wearing flowing robes covering all but his hands and head. His serene visage is comprised of downturned eyes, a slender nose, and elongated ear lobes, and a topknot or ushnisha atop his coiffure, all in front of a large, round halo with a petaled interior. Below the Buddha are two kneeling figures in front of a tiered stupa. A fine example from the ancient Gandharan Empire! Size: 3.125" W x 5.625" H (7.9 cm x 14.3 cm).
