Description:

Pakistan, Gandharan culture, ca. 2nd to 3rd century CE. Impactful gray schist scultpure of the emaciated or fasting Buddha. One of the rarest depictions of Buddha in any medium, this truly exceptional example shows the Buddha with a very thin gaunt face, sunken eyes, his esophogeal tract clearly exposed as if the flesh were eaten away. Size: 7.75" W x 13.5" H (19.7 cm x 34.3 cm); 17.75" H (45.1 cm) on included custom stand.

After reaching enlightenment at Bodhgaya, Shakyamuni meditated and fasted for forty-nine days. Thus, showing him as an emaciated renouncer relates to his enlightenment and his status as a yogic ascetic who has ultimate control over his body.

Provenance: private New Jersey collection, ex Benjamin Rice Jr. Coll. NY 1980’s
