Gallienus Roman Bronze Coin. Rome, 253-268 CE. Obv: "GALLIENUS AUG" (Gallienus Augustus; crowned head of Emperor Gallienus. Rev: Centaur with bow and arrow. From attached note: "Gallienus began rule with his father, Valerian, at the age of thirty-five. When his father was taken captive by the Persians in 260 (CE), he became emperor of Rome. Gibbons describes him as a "genius," but with no interest in the military or government. Because of this lack of interest, a series of rebellions broke out. Gallienus tried to stop the Empire from disintegrating, but wasn't strong enough to do it. He was killed by his own soldiers." 25mm diameter. Provenance: Ex- M.
