Egypt, Coptic culture, ca. 2nd to 4th century CE. A beautiful cotton textile fragment depicting horse-riding men, warriors, and a plethora of avian creatures. The central panels depict a pair of warriors above a cane-wielding horseman, a large bird with outstretched wings, and another set of warriors below. The bottom figures wear intricate clothing and hold short swords in their hands while one rides a horse, and behind is an artist's rendition of the missing areas. The peripheries are lined with bulbous triangles formed from three connected circles and have protruding peaks between which petite birds are displayed. Size (textile): 7.2" W x 12.625" H (18.3 cm x 32.1 cm); (frame): 12.5" W x 15.6" H (31.8 cm x 39.6 cm)

Provenance: private Ventura County, California, USA collection, acquired in the 1990-2000

  • Condition: This is a fragment of a larger textile panel with losses to several interior and peripheral areas as shown. Fraying and light staining in several areas. Nice preservation to original colors and imagery. Lower figural window has modern artist rendition of missing areas.
