Description:

Spanish Colonial inspired, Mexico, ca. 19th century CE. In a beautifully carved and gilded wood frame, a large painting tenderly representing the Virgin Mary dressed in her traditional flowing blue and white robes and composed as Our Lady of Sorrows (Mater Dolorosa in Latin) pressing her hands together in a prayerful gesture as she contemplates the Crucifixion and looks out from the canvas with a pensive gaze, light seeming to radiate from her glowing skin. As is customary for Mater Dolorosa imagery, a sword pierces the Virgin Mary's heart, a reference to Luke 2:35: "And Simeon blessed them and said to Mary His mother, 'Behold, this Child is appointed for the fall and rise of many in Israel, and for a sign to be opposed--and a sword will pierce even your own soul-- to the end that thoughts from many hearts may be revealed.'" Size: painting measures 28.5" L x 20.5" W (72.4 cm x 52.1 cm); 42.5" L x 28.375" W (108 cm x 72.1 cm) in frame

This image is one of the most important compositions in which Mary is depicted without Christ. She is represented as the mourning mother projecting a grieving attitude, with the words, "Maria, Madre Afligida, Sed mi Madre: En muerte y en vida" (Maria, Heartbroken Mother, Be My Mother: in death and in life) on the border below.
