Description:

Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Central Java, Solo River, Pleistocene era, ca. 1.5 to 1.2 Million years ago. An impressive fossilized fragment of a tusk from the prehistoric Stegodon trigonocephalus, a creature similar to elephants. The tusk tapers to the rounded tip and exhibits a pretty mottled coloration of beige, brown, and black, due to the fossilization process. Stegodon was believed to be an ancestor to mammoths and modern-day elephants, however recent studies suggest they may have been only a sister species to Elephantidae, and do not have any direct descendants. Species of Stegodons that developed on islands - such as trigonocephalus - were often smaller than their mainland relatives, and in Indonesia the smallest were even preyed upon by Komodo dragons! This tusk is an amazing reminder of the prehistoric fauna that once inhabited much of Asia! Size: 15.75" L x 2.25" W (40 cm x 5.7 cm)
