Description:

Northeastern Asia, Russia, Siberia, Yakut, Pleistocene, ca. 2 million to 10,000 years ago. This is a near pristine example of a woolly mammoth lower mandible and attached molar from a juvenile! The bone and tooth have developed a lovely chocolate brown hue due to mineral composition of the sediment and fossilization process. Mammoths had 4 sets of molars, and this tooth is the forward set one, the root firmly attached to the jawbone. Mammoths go through 6 sets of teeth as they age - the teeth start at about 1 inch (2.54 cm) as calves and reaching 9 to 12 inches (22.86 to 30.48 cm) as an adult at around 30 years old. This tooth is 3.75 inches (9.52 cm) in length, from a younger animal on either the first or second set of teeth, that sadly did not live to old age - perhaps succumbing to predation, illness, or starvation. Size (jaw): 12" L x 4" W (30.5 cm x 10.2 cm); 7.6" H (19.3 cm) on included custom stand; (tooth): 3.75" L x 1.75" W (9.5 cm x 4.4 cm)
