Northern Europe, Netherlands, North Sea region, Middle Pleistocene to Early Holocene, ca. 200,000 to 10,000 years ago. An impressively preserved and complete fossilized radius or lower front leg bone of the famous woolly mammoth, known scientifically as Mammuthus primigenius, boasting spectacular detail and a rich patina in hues of espresso and mocha, all enveloped in a lustrous, modern burnish. Note the recessed, beige-colored grooves on the thicker end of the bone, which served as joint end surfaces at the knee and are thus worn smooth from grinding at the juncture. The massive fossil then twists and tapers to the more petite ankle joint end. The rich dark hue wonderfully shows off the bone grain, scarring on the surface where muscle and tendons were attached as well as natural pore anatomy in the bone. Most mammoth bones are found in pieces - rarely are they discovered in complete or even near complete condition making this example a rare exception! Size: 22.25" L x 9.5" W (56.5 cm x 24.1 cm)
