Description:

Ancient seas, Paleozoic period. ca. 400 million years ago. A stunning ammonite fossil cut to reveal the interior chambers of this prehistoric mollusk. The organic material of the shell was replaced during the fossilization process with minerals that created the beautiful golden pyrite, as seen here on the ridges of the spiral. The pyrite has been lightly brushed to enhance the glimmering colors. The exterior of the ammonite is an unpolished stone and left in its nearly original form. The ammonite spiral is mesmerizing and so aesthetically pleasing that it is often used to demonstrate the Fibonacci sequence in nature. The name "ammonite" came from Pliny the Elder after the Egyptian god Ammon, who was typically depicted wearing ram's horns that Pliny thought these fossils resembled. Lucite stand for photography purposes only. Size: 1.75" L x 1.125" W (4.4 cm x 2.9 cm)
