North America, Northwestern United States, Alaska or Canada, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. An unusual hand carved effigy of a whale made from fossilized mammoth tusk ivory. The tusk was cut and polished, the underside flattened to create a stable base to rest upon. The upturned tail has a flattened fluke, and the rotund body is elongated, tapering to a pointed nose tip. Perhaps a simplified representation of a beluga whale figurine, and the underside is signed "SAMUEL." Size: 11.25" L x 2.5" W x 3" H (28.6 cm x 6.4 cm x 7.6 cm)
