Description:

East Asia, Japan, Seto Inland Sea, later Pleistocene, ca. 500,000 to 15,000 years ago. A large, fossilized tooth from Palaeoloxodon naumanni, colloquially Naumann's Elephant, an extinct species whose remains have been found throughout Southern Japan. The structures of the tooth are clearly visible here as it rests in fossilized seabed. Ancient coastal areas like those around the Seto Inland sea and large glacial lakes were important locations along seasonal migration pathways for the animals, and their remains are commonly found embedded in them. The animal was closely related to the modern Asian elephant, but, like mammoths, had a thick layer of subcutaneous fat and long fur to keep it warm in the cold weather of the Ice Age. Size: 5" L x 5.75" W x 2" H (12.7 cm x 14.6 cm x 5.1 cm)
