Description:

**First Time At Auction**

North America, Southern United States, Central Florida, Withlacoochee River, Oligocene, ca. 38 million years ago. If you know agatized coral, you will immediately see the rarity and exceptionally unique beauty to this museum-grade specimen! This is a fully agatized geode from fossilized coral that has been sliced to see the hollow inner cavity. Over millions of years, silica replaced the coral minerals, creating chalcedony agate. The cavity is open to view the unusual semi-translucent chalcedony structures in golden-amber hues. These structures are botryoidal or "bubble-like," and appear as if they are given a light dusting of sugary powder! Agatized coral is highly prized not only by fossil collectors but by gem and mineral collectors as well. The majority of agatized coral is either solid inside when sliced or it possesses a relatively unremarkable internal cavity. However, this example is dreamy and visually striking with the rounded, translucent lobes which make it stand out from what is normally observed! Size: 8" L x 4.7" W (20.3 cm x 11.9 cm)

Agatized coral of this quality is so rare that usually it is cut up and used in very expensive custom jewelry pieces. As a complete crystal specimen, it is worth even more in its natural state.
