Description:

Eastern Europe, Russia, Ryazan region, Middle Jurassic Era, Callovian stage, ca. 165 to 161 million years ago. A large ammonite fossil (Indosphinctes mutatus) with the characteristic spiral slightly recessed at the center; a naturally occurring Fibonacci sequence! The stone from which the shell was excavated has been removed from most of the surface, but carved to create a natural base for the ammonite to stand up on. This is an awesome display piece that showcases some interesting anatomical features - the wavy formations, known as sutures, are visible in areas where the upper surface has flaked away. Sutures are formed by the division of internal chambers and septa (walls dividing chambers) as the organism grows, the suture patterns also aid in species identification. The verso has an old label in Cyrillic with the ammonite species and find site. Size: 9" Diameter x 3" W x 10.75" H (22.9 cm x 7.6 cm x 27.3 cm)
