Description:

Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Guerrero, Mezcala culture (Balsas culture), ca. 700 to 200 BCE. A group of five green and grey stone carvings from a culture whose most famous cultural artifacts are incredible abstract human figures carved in the form of ceremonial hand axes. Four of these are those style of objects - two of them detailed miniatures and another quite small - and the fifth is of the "water bag" or "skin bag" style. These objects are carved with the use of strings and drills, and especially the ornate style of the two miniatures here demonstrates how amazing their skill with those simple tools was. These abstract-style figures have served as inspiration for modern artists in the 20th century. Size of largest: 2" W x 4.3" H (5.1 cm x 10.9 cm)

Provenance: Ex-Paul Simon collection, Taos, NM acquired before 1985
