Description:

Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Lombok region, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A wonderful gathering of five hand-woven creel baskets composed of natural plant fibers. The shortest creel has wooden panels along the rectangular base and an ovoid mouth atop a deep body. The second basket has a flared base, a tall body, and a removable openwork lid. The third and fourth baskets have thick wooden feet, bulbous bodies that taper at the shoulder, and removable lids with funnel-shaped mouths. The tallest basket has a uniform rectangular body, a broad lid with an open mouth, and a deep interior cavity. A creel is a basket used in the water for catching fish, and the narrow mouths ensures the captured fish are unable to escape. Size of largest (broad lid): 9.5" W x 10.375" H (24.1 cm x 26.4 cm).
