Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A lovely cast-bronze patera with a shallow circular bowl/scoop and an integral tapering handle. The upper portion of the handle has a three-lobed triangular design punched through to act as a suspension hole, and the bottom of the scoop displays a raised, bullseye-style omphalos in the center. In ancient times, a patera would have been used to serve food and drink at symposia/dinner parties or as an offering dish to pour libations of wine and other liquids at religious ceremonies. The tool is covered in layers of matte brown, green, and russet patina, though scattered abraded areas reveal with reflective golden-brown bronze beneath. Size: 4.75" W x 8.6" H (12.1 cm x 21.8 cm); 9" H (22.9 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; ex-private H.G. collection, Rhineland-Palatinate, acquired between 1970 and 1999
