Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A petite yet highly-symbolic cast-bronze pendant of a characteristically phallic form. The pendant boasts a phallus projecting from the side opposite an abstract projection, perhaps a foot, with incised striations on the tip. A second smaller phallus is presented on the front with suspension loops both above and below. Phalluses were common symbols in ancient Rome and, when depicted in a disembodied form like this example, were used as what Pliny wrote of as a "medicus invidiae" to ward against the evil eye. Modern necklace strand included. Size (pendant): 1.4" W x 1.25" H (3.6 cm x 3.2 cm); size (necklace strand): 22" L (55.9 cm).
