Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A fine cast-bronze leg for a smaller piece of furniture like a stool or small cauldron. The leg has a curved body with a vertical arm presenting the stylized head of a griffin with a petaled waist and a pair of petite wings projecting upward along the verso. The characteristically avian head presents with a large beak, a pair of almond-shaped eyes beneath furrowed brows, and perky ears. A nicely-preserved example enveloped in dark-brown patina. Size: 0.9" W x 4.7" H (2.3 cm x 11.9 cm); 6.125" H (15.6 cm) on included custom stand.
