Description:

Western Europe, Late Roman & Byzantine to Medieval period, ca. 3rd to 12th century CE. A collection of 5 bronze, leaded-bronze, and brass buckles with motifs etched and cast into the surfaces. The buckles each contain a panel for securing to a strap and some even retain their loops and prongs. A nice patina envelops the surfaces but there are clear motifs of scrolling foliate and geometric cruciform shapes, and a bear head is etched into the surface of one! Size: 3.25" L x 1" W (8.3 cm x 2.5 cm)

Provenance: ex-Nancy and Dr. E.F. Simpson collection, Los Angeles, California, USA, acquired from 1970 to 2000
