Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A fine, cast bronze bust of a male youth, with a draped garment across his chest, and a scalloped border at the lower end. Looking ahead with a hopeful expression, the figure may represent Antinous, the Bithynian Greek youth who was the beloved of Roman Emperor Hadrian. Quite attractive, he presents a clean-shaven face, his beautiful visage featuring winsome eyes delineated with generous lids, a pronounced browline leading to an aquiline nose, full heart-shaped lips, and a dimpled chin - framed by Antinous' characteristic curlicue locks. A special piece, boasting a marvelous form that has developed a rich green patina over the ages. Size: 2.625" H (6.7 cm)

Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; ex-private German collection, acquired before 1995
