Description:

Italy, South Italic, Daunian, ca 350 BCE. A finely hand-built ceramic vessel of an olpe-like form but with a strainer bottom, beautifully painted in red and black on a buff ground with horizontal striations around the body, and more intricate geometric and linear motifs adorning the single strap handle and concave spout. In addition to the strap handle that bridges rim to body, the form boasts a globular body, a concave rim with one depressed area for pouring, and a strainer bottom. An unusual Daunian pottery form, which was influenced by the cultural commingling of the native Italians and colonist Greeks who settled in the area at this time, with a smooth and elegantly sinous silhouette. Size: 3.25" W x 3.125" H (8.3 cm x 7.9 cm)

Provenance: From the collection for exhibition purposes Dr V.Z., Switzerland, acquired in the 1950s / 1960s from 1986 until 2001.
