Description:

Ancient Northern Europe, British Isles, Atlantic Bronze Age to Iron Age transition period, ca. 1300 to 700 BCE. An intriguing axe head of the palstave type cast from bronze via the lost wax technique. The slender design features a squared-off butt end, a thin stop bar surmounted by petaloid flanges, and a splayed head with protruding points and a sharpened edge. A palstave axe head is denoted as such if it is hafted using a bifurcated wooden handle - rather than a single-pronged handle - secured by the flanges. Lustrous blue-green patina envelops the blade half of the axe head. Size: 6.9" L x 1.625" W (17.5 cm x 4.1 cm)

Provenance: ex-estate of Eldert Bontekoe, Pegasi Numismatics, Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA, acquired before 2000
