Description:

Pre-Columbian, Peru, Incan Empire, ca. 1200 to 1532 CE. A miniature effigy vessel known as a canopa, crafted in the form of a llama or alpaca, hand-carved and meticulously smoothed from creamy white quartzite stone with a hollowed-out interior. The drilled cavity in the back likely held animal fat or coca leaves as offerings to the gods, intended to ensure fertility and a healthy harvest and herd. The entire canopa would usually be buried in a field or beneath the animals' corral to protect the llamas or alpacas. The semi-translucent quality of the stone is particularly striking, as it glows when backlit. Size: 2.25" L x 1.25" W x 2" H (5.7 cm x 3.2 cm x 5.1 cm)
